"It was a chaotic night. You came to me in the dream. Suddenly you are standing right in front of me. Then it all calms down. You are standing in the pouring rain, between the dark tree trunks. But you're not wet. And there's another forest. There's something you are going to tell me, but you can not do it. Your mouth opens, but there are no sounds. You want to say something, but you can not say it. I wake up, reach for your hand. I do not know where I am. I sit up on the couch. It is dark outside. Only a faint glow from a light without a source in the window frame. As if you have just been here." Christian is all alone in a hut deep in the forest. There is not another human being there. He has not seen a living soul in over a week. The former pensioner on Holmen has lost his life's work, his home and his wife, Magda-Marie, is dead. Time stands still. Christian writes a diary in an attempt to hold on to something. But he has begun to doubt what he sees. And he does not think it has dawned on him that Magda-Marie is no longer alive. To understand what happens to us when the words fall short, Erland Kiøsterud's writing combines a deep, sensible presence in nature with inner reflection in a novel with a masterful description of nature and great allegorical power. With "De første ordene" Erland Kiøsterud concludes the novel trilogy that began with "Henders verk" (2015) and continued with the novel "Åpenbaringen" (2018).
